  1. We send our deepest condolences. We will miss her kind words and candy filled hand shakes. She was a joy to be around and she loved the Lord. She will be missed. Until we see her again

  2. When I received the shocking news of Sister Cherry’s tragic, untimely death, I could hardly process it. It didn’t seem real. I am heartbroken. My husband Benny and I had come to love her deeply. I know I looked forward to seeing her beautiful countenance smiling back at me every Sunday morning when I ministered.
It is not a cliché to say that her smile literally brightened a room. She was like a burst of sunshine in her pew at Faith Tabernacle Church. Always pleasant, always looking for a way that she could serve the members of the Body of Christ, Sister Cherry was a wonderful blessing to our congregation. If she saw a need that she had the means to fulfill, she was right on it. And she did everything with an attitude of delight. In spite of her age, she reminded me of a little girl who excitedly helps her mom or dad with a project or chore.
She made me glad to see her in church. She went out of her way to do kind things for me, giving me little gifts—“just because”—because she is a giver, and because she was very fond of me. She loved my preaching, and encouraged me often with her words of support. She complimented me on my outfits and always told me how pretty she thought I was.
Last summer she gave me an expensive study Bible. She told me that she wanted to give it to me before she left. She was planning to go to South Carolina to be with her sister. I was surprised to see her in church the next Sunday. And then the next Sunday. And the Sunday after that. Well, I finally realized she decided not to go. I never asked her why, but I can tell you, I was quite happy she was still with us.
All these things made her very endearing to me, but more importantly, she was an asset to Faith Tabernacle Church, and she will be greatly missed. The aisle where she sat near the door on Patapsco Avenue will never be as bright. It is hard to accept that I will never see her joyfully dancing in the aisle while the choir sings.
Adding to the shock of her unexpected death that ended so tragically, is the fact that we never got to pray for her because of the covid-19 quarantine. It hurts to know that she was alone in her final hours. Yet I know that even though she had no human comfort, she had the faithful comfort of the Holy Spirit. As her spirit left this earthly realm, she went immediately into the presence of her Lord, whom she loved and served with all of her heart and strength. She is a powerful example of why we must be ready at all times to leave this world, because we never know when death can come calling.
Sister Cherry was not a member of our church for long, and yet she made a huge impact on all of us, because her graciousness stood out. She was like the Proverbs 31 woman described in verses 1, 25, 26 & 31:
“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies …. Strength and honor are her clothing, and she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness…. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.”
I know Sister Cherry’s works are now praising her inside Heaven’s Gates.
