Obituary 

Stanley Theophilis Saunders Jr., also known as Stan or Pop, was born in Miami, Florida on Sept. 5, 1953, as the oldest child of Doreen and Stan Saunders Sr. Stan received his early education through the Miami school system attending Miami Edison Senior High School. During his education, Stan expressed his love of music, learning to play multiple instruments including the trombone, piano, baritone sax and drums. His musical talent warranted recognition, earning him a band scholarship to Bethune-Cookman College. Stan graduated from Bethune-Cookman in 1975 and continued his studies, earning a Master of Education from North Carolina Central University in 1982. In 1999, Stan met his wife, Barbara (Bobbi) during a story he was covering. Stan and Bobbi were married in 2003, blending their families together where 8 became enough. Together, they made many trips between Baltimore and Miami to care for his mother. He also enjoyed throwing soirees with Bobbi, entertaining friends and family. Stan’s passion for journalism and sports media was evident to all who had the privilege of meeting him, working with him, or watching him on the news. Stan began his career as a DJ on the radio in Miami and later at Bethune Cookman. He transitioned to television reporting, working on a station in Memphis. After receiving a call from John Buren, Stan came to Baltimore and worked at WJZ for over 25 years. Stan started off in news and moved to sports. He called games for the Orioles and the Morgan State Bears, enjoying every moment to the depths of his soul. After stepping away from his role in front of the camera, Stan worked as an adjunct professor at Towson University and a media studies professor at Johns Hopkins University. He later worked as a substitute teacher at Loch Raven Technical Academy and Edmondson-Westside High School. He cofounded the nonprofit Baltimore Academy of Sports and Entertainment (B.A.S.E.) together with Bobbi. Located in Douglas High School, B.A.S.E. was incorporated into the Baltimore City Public School curriculum in 2005 and became an LLC in 2020. Stan accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and attended Delightful Blessings Church. He loved to share his favorite scriptures, Psalm 23 and Proverbs 3:4. In his personal life, Stan enjoyed jazz, gospel, funk, and reggae music. He loved shopping, reading news/magazine articles, traveling, antique planes, spending time with loved ones, hanging out with his dog, Ella, and collecting sports memorabilia. He couldn’t help himself from bringing something home from whatever adventure he encountered each day. On June 26, 2026, God called Stan home after fighting a lengthy battle with Sarcoidosis. He wanted everyone to know that he was at peace, and that he leaves his peace for all of us. Stan is survived by his loving wife (Bobbi), mother (Doreen), children (Sterling, Savoy, Karastan, Karenja, Mechaelle, Michael, Tiffi’ni, Brandon), grandchildren (Dante, Jakai, Karastan Jr., Benjamin, Elijah, Jeremiah, Julian (deceased)), brother (Stillman), sister (Karen), sisters-in-law (Vanessa & Nancy), beloved dog (Ella), nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends
