Obituary

Ulrica Greenidge Pope, age 82, died peacefully March 9, 2017, in the Gilchrist Hospice Center, in Towson, Maryland, after a long struggle with heart and kidney failure. Ulrica was born December 23, 1934, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to the late Maysie A. (nee’ Brathwaite) and the late Joseph Nathaniel Greenidge of Barbados. She was the second child of the family.

Ulrica was baptized and confirmed in Atlantic City’s Saint Augustine’s Episcopal Church. She began her education in the Atlantic City Public School System where she attended New Jersey Avenue School, and graduated from Atlantic City High School with the Class of 1952. She attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. “Sissy”, as she was affectionately called, received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Work from Morgan State College in 1956. She continued her education at Howard University in Washington, DC, from which she received her Master’s Degree in Social Work in 1963.

In 1956, Ulrica began her work career in New York City at Macy’s Department store as a sales associate. She then became a case worker for the New Jersey Department of Welfare. In 1960, she secured a position with the City of Baltimore’s Welfare Department as a case worker. She worked for in the Baltimore City Public Schools for more than 30 years as a social worker until her retirement in 1994.

In 1960, Ulrica married Richard A. Pope, Sr. and from this union a son, Jeffrey, was born. In addition to raising her son, she also was involved in the community. She was a lifelong member of Episcopal Church Women of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin; the Reviewer Book Club; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority – Baltimore Alumnae Chapter; Morgan State University National Alumni Association – Class of 1956; Howard University School of Social Work Alumni Association – Class of 1963.

During her retirement, Ulrica continued volunteering with several organizations. Ulrica was a dedicated lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority – Baltimore Alumnae Chapter. As part of her commitment to education, Ulrica was also a life-time member of the Morgan State University Alumni Association. Ulrica was an active member of the Fairmont Neighborhood Association. She has resided in her current neighborhood for more than 51 years where she consistently voiced her opinions on matters pertaining to the safety, livelihood, and the wellbeing of her neighbors. She was an active member of The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin and served in many capacities. She often answered the call to fulfill the needs of the church mission and was an obedient and loyal servant.

Ulrica was predeceased by: her parents; grandchildren, Samantha, Logan and Hannah; brother, Joseph F. Greenidge, Sr.; step-daughter, Bridgette P. Kelly.

Ulrica is survived by: her son, Jeffrey and his wife, Laura Pope; grandchildren, Connor, Zachary, and Adam Pope all of Westminster, Maryland; step-son, Richard and his wife, Ann Pope of Miami, FL and their sons, Richard (Kristen) and Miles; Bridgette’s husband, Willie Kelly of Los Angeles, California and their children, Lemetrious, Eboni, Christina, and Adria; sisters-in-law, Carolyn W. Greenidge, and her children, Joseph, Jr. and Charles, and Carolyn and Joseph, Sr.’s, grandchildren, Bianca, Darnell, and LaQuan and Sharyn P. Hunter (Kenneth), and their children, Kim, Kelli, and Kourtney; extended family, Erica Taylor (Sage) and Sharon Young (Sean); first cousins, Gwendolyn Franklin, Stanley Harewood and Ann Todd; and a host of other relatives and cl
